These Are The Delicacies of a Ruined Evening

I always recall an eveing when she and I had gone out to dinner. We had put on our nice clothes, not the best, and spent the evening out.
During the ride home she became silent, and seemed angry, neither of us spoke. She wasn’t speaking and I became silent, feeling her anger in the air.
At home the front door flew open, and her keys sailed through the living room as she stormed up the stairs, and then silence.
I never knew what it was about. The evening had been routine and uneventful, so much so, that I can not even recall what kind of evenig we were out on. We went out often and varied the places and people we were with.
I can clearly recall standing alone, and confused, in the silent shadows that was our home.

  1. A lovely thoughtful piece that puts me in mind of the Maya Angelou quote: People will forget what you say. People will forget what you do. But they will never forget how you made them feel.

This piece so simply and perfectly captures the sadness and emptiness of the waning days of a relationship.. “alone, and confused, in the silent shadows…”
